Pregnenolone is a hormone naturally made in the human body, principally in the adrenal glands. Cholesterol is the precursor molecule for the synthesis of pregnenolone as well as all the other steroid hormones, including estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, cortisol, and DHEA. However, pregnenolone itself has minimal to no androgenic, estrogenic or anabolic activity. Human studies show that pregnenolone is found in nervous tissue and the brain in much higher concentrations than in the blood stream. There is also evidence that there is a higher concentration of DHEA in the human brain than in the plasma.
